A Birthday to Remember

Yesterday was Sydney's ninth birthday. It blows my mind how fast time flies. Nine years ago was a tumultuous time for us. We weren't expecting to see Sydney until the beginning of October. But, suddenly she was here! And our lives have been fuller for the gift of her than we ever could have imagined.

Yesterday was also supposed to be her first day of 3rd grade. She's been telling anyone she could how excited she was to go back to school on her birthday for months. I had this cute idea of a collage to share with some of her firsts along with her first day of school picture. But, it wasn't to be. The poor girl came down with a fever last Friday and is still trying to shake it. I still put together the collage. What sweet memories: Her first bottle, coming home after 22 days, first birthday, first day of preschool and kindergarten.

But her first day of 3rd grade will just have to wait.
We had already planned to celebrate her birthday on Saturday since we knew Tuesday would be so busy. I made our annual pedicure appointment but this time we invited her friend Lauren along. We had a great time, but Sydney could barely muster this smile.
She had asked to go to one of her favorite restaurants, Bravo. We were going to cancel, but she begged us not to. My parents, brother and nephew came along to celebrate. We ended up bringing all her food home and I think the whole table except for Sydney shared in her birthday dessert.
We then headed back to our house for cake and homemade ice-cream. Of which Sydney still hasn't had any. But you can tell she picked out her very own cake - Thursday before she got sick. All she wanted was the peanut butter and chocolate cake (is was delicious!) and she asked for, "Happy Birthday Sydney" to be written on it in purple letters. So Sydney. I am planning on taking her back next week and getting her whichever cupcake she picks out for her very own.
Here she is trying to muster up a smile while unwrapping gifts. Don't you just feel so bad for her?!
Yesterday morning while Sydney laid in bed these two boys got up and ready for their first days of 2nd and 5th grade. And Macy knew something big was going on and she needed to be right in the middle of it!
