Our Home Away From Home

I think one of the more intriguing aspects of our travel plans is the camper. Some of our friends have been surprised by this choice but once we explain our reasoning people usually say it makes perfect sense.

The main reasons we got a camper to help with our travel and move adventures are:
1. What we paid for our camper is equal to the expected hotel costs we would incur over the next two years.
2. It will be a home base in whichever state we don't have a house, once we pick a location.
3. We don't have to eat out for every meal - another cost saver.
3. No bed bugs.
4. We'll have it after our adventure winds down, which is an asset - and a fun one at that!

I have been asked a lot about what it's like inside, so I thought I'd share. We are surely not roughing it with this camper. It's a trailer, so we pull it with my Expedition, which really does a great job. At least that's what Mike tells me. He does all the pulling.

Here is the layout from above. It is hard to see this from my pictures, so I thought getting your bearings would help. The rectangles at the bottom of the picture are the doors. One enters into the main living area and the other enters into the "master" bedroom, right near one of the doors to the bathroom, which is convenient, especially for pit stops when we're on the road (another benefit - no more travel plaza bathroom trips!!).
The pictures are not in a great order, so bear with me. You may want to scroll back up to the above graphic to get your bearings.

here is our bedroom. It's tight, but there is room to walk all the way around the bed, which not all campers have. We have storage above, on either side of, and under the bed. This comforter is the generic tan one that came with the camper. I want to add a few more touches of home, including nicer bedding, but that will come with time.

This picture shows the door to our room on the left and one of the doors to the bathroom on the right. To the right of this picture is the doorway/hall that leads to the rest of the camper. This bedroom is in the front end of the camper.

This picture is taken from the previously viewed corner look back across the bed.

This is the bathroom. While it isn't roomy by typical standards, it is roomy for an RV and was one of the main reasons we picked this layout. We didn't need a tub and the shower configuration took up less space. The way this room is laid out gives the most floor room around the toilet (don't ask, I'm weird and don't like leaning against the toilet while doing other bathroom tasks such as brushing my teeth. Just gross). This is also one of the bigger vanities we saw. The sink is tiny, but there is room next to it to set things which is so nice. We are waiting on a door Mike ordered for the left side of the cabinet. As it came, there was room under the sink but it was almost inaccessible so Mike has been tooling around with some of these spaces to make them more efficient.

This area is to the right of the shower. The TV in the living room is just on the other side of this angled wall. We added a hanging shoe rack on the door which we use for extra bathroom storage. It's a little bulky but adds quite a bit of storage and easy access to Mike's and my shoes.

This is what is on the other side of that angled wall. Here I am standing in the living room/kitchen area looking forward into the master bedroom.

The kids' bunk area is in the back of the camper. Originally there were 4 beds there. Mike took the one on the bottom right out to give room for more storage. Macy has been sleeping there for now. We will probably add seating or a desk there in the future, once we figure out a little better how we use this space. We also put the bikes here when we are traveling.

The kids have a nice wardrobe area on the right side of their bunk space.

To the left we added a shoe rack which hold their shoes and other miscellaneous things they like to have near like books, pencils and headphones.

This view is from near the TV and hallway to the master bedroom looking through the kitchen area towards the kids' bunk area. You can see the main door into the camper on the left side, just past the counter. We added the hooks and white board, which have been so helpful and convenient. Each campground has wifi passwords and other helpful information, so we keep all that right there.

This is standing at the door looking in toward the front of the camper.

The banquette area and the couch fold into extra sleeping areas, if necessary.

The cabinets are super cheap, but nice looking. Hopefully they'll hold up. Mike's expertise in all things handy-man has already been a huge help in making this space our home.

We are clearly not roughing it!

I hope you enjoyed the tour! We sure are loving our little home away from home and already find ourselves looking forward to each coming trip and sad when one comes to an end.
