Sydney's adventure

So we recently had quite the adventure.
Sydney came home from school a couple Wednesdays ago with an upset stomach. The school nurse thought she was nervous because they had speech meet that day. She complained of a stomach ache but she seemed fine otherwise and was eating ok. Occasionally she would get a fever, but it was low, around 99*. I kept her home Thursday and the kids had Friday off of school. She seemed fine Friday morning and was up and playing with the boys. But by Friday evening it was obvious she wasn't ok. She could hardly walk upright and her stomach pain had gotten worse and more localized. So, off we went to the ER where we found out she would need her appendix removed.

They did the surgery Saturday morning and we thought we'd be going home Sunday or Monday. However, while her appendix didn't exactly rupture, it was deteriorating and did leak which left infection inside her. Also, her bowels didn't wake up after surgery like they should have. There are, obviously, many more details I could share, but as this is a blog (I'd feel better talking about this if we were face to face) and I'm just plain tired, I'll keep it simple. Sydney ended up being in the hospital until the following Sunday, a week later. It was quite a roller coaster and Mike and I went through some scary moments.

But we had good moments, too. Many of Sydney's (and our) friends came for visits which really cheered us up and gave us a break from what we were going through.

Here is Sydney walking, which was very hard for her with her pain but a must in order for her to improve and be able to go home.

We also had a movie night with the boys. It felt so good to do something normal in the midst of our chaos.

Finally Sydney started eating again. Her new favorite food? Scrambled eggs. Every day. ;)

Her highlight was all the Doggie Brigade dogs that stopped by to visit. In fact, they made such a difference that I asked if our puppy, Katy, could come visit - and they said yes!!

Mike said as Katy got to the nurses station she was nose down and pulling on the leash. We think she could smell the same smells we had on our clothes when we stopped at home and knew she was near Sydney. They were both so happy!

Sunday morning Sydney decided to join the clean plate club...

Which was a sign she was ready to come home!!!! This picture makes me happier than I have words to describe!
