Sydney's Adventures in X-ray Land

There is a reason I titled the blog "Crazy Sommers Daze". Life is crazy (and often, crazy-fun!) and much of the last 7 years have felt a bit like a daze. They flew by and suddenly we have an almost-7 year old, a 4 year old and a 3 year old! How in the world did this happen??!!
The last couple weeks have felt a little crazy around here and not quite as much in the fun direction. First, we spent about a week with 3 out of the 5 of us battling stomach bugs. Not cool. Twice we have had to clean out the car. If you saw that crazy car driving in the rain with all 4 windows down last Tuesday, that was us. But, I think finally, hopefully, we are through all of that.
And then there's Sydney. Some time in the middle of the night on Sunday she woke us up with her screams. We ran in to find her screaming that her left arm hurt. When we tried to move her, she screamed all the more. This is the part where I share what a Drama Queen she can be. We are used to sort of dialing down the drama to find out what really is going on. Since she had been laying on that arm we figured it had just fallen asleep and she had never experienced that tingling sensation before and was scared. We told her to move her arm around and go back to sleep; it would go away in a bit.
Well. It didn't. She woke us up early Monday morning screaming once more about her arm. We couldn't even touch her without sending her into more fits of screams. This is the hard part of parenting: Knowing what, exactly, you are supposed to do. We tried to remember if anything unusual had happened the day before. Other than our first family bike-ride, we couldn't think of anything. Maybe she was cramping up? We had no idea. She would use her arm from her elbow down, but get near her shoulder and more screams. She pretty much sat still most of Monday. It seemed to be easing up a bit by evening and we still weren't sure what to do for her. Well, wouldn't you know it, because life is crazy, Sydney woke up Tuesday morning with a double eye infection. Awesome. So at this point there is no question whether or not to call the doctor. They got us in at 9:50. The Rx for the pink eye was a no-brainer. What I wasn't exactly expecting was to get sent to the hospital for x-rays. Sydney looked fine, nothing out of place, no hot spots, swollen arms, lumps, fever or anything to explain why her shoulder clearly gave her such pain. So, I guess the next step is x-rays. Thankfully, that's something my mom knows a little about. She started off as an x-ray tech about 35 years ago at Children's Hospital. I remember (and I'm sure she does better) when the hospital first got use of the mobile CT unit. Mom trained on that and it became her area of specialty. Now she is the supervisor in radiology over MRI, CT and ultrasound (and I'm probably missing something else). So, as we leave the doc's office I call my mom: "We're on our way! See you soon!" After spending way too long picking up the Rx for Syd's eyes, getting gas and picking up Corban at school just in case things ran long, we finally made it to the hospital and stepped off the elevators to a waiting grandma. The kids thought this was the best thing in the world!!!
After a short wait, it was Sydney's turn for her x-rays. My little wiggle worm did amazing holding still for the machine. She thought it was so cool the way it could move all around the room. We told her it was a big camera. I asked her to smile (mostly because I love her smile and a little because I get more strength from her than she knows) and, of course, she looked right at the x-ray machine and gave it her best smile! Too cute! Right away it was fairly clear nothing was obviously wrong, but I would have to wait for the official report from the pediatrician. Sydney was in heaven and, of course, was treated like a princess from everyone who also watched me grow up back in the day, too.
Finally, after a quick lunch at the hospital cafeteria (oh the memories! I spent countless hours as a teen and also a newlywed as a volunteer in this hospital) we made our way home. With no more answers than when we left the house in the morning.
However. About an hour after we returned home, Sydney came running up to me with her left arm straight up in the air shouting, "Look mommy! It's all better!" And, sure enough, it is! We still have no idea what happened. I called the pediatrician this morning and like we thought, the x-rays were all clear; nothing had been dislocated or broken. Sydney will now tell you that the x-rays made her all better. :) Right at first when I asked her what happened she told me the pain medicine (I had given her Tylenol much earlier, too long ago to be the real answer) took her pain away and gave it to someone else. LOL I'm sure glad that's not really how that stuff works! But, it doesn't matter. We had an adventure and now we are back to being a healthy family. Blessings all around.
