NC Q&A Part 1

Since I seem to hear the same questions over and over again, I thought it might be good to do a Q&A post. Every time I tried to plan this post, though, I thought of more and more questions and even some questions I think you should be asking us but aren't. :)

First, you might want to revisit my very first post on our crazy adventure HERE. Many of the questions I'm asked are answered there and even though that was over a year ago, we have stayed pretty close to our original plan - if anything, we are ahead of schedule on a few things.

When are you moving?
Our plan was always to move the summer of 2018 and that's still the plan. I will graduate that spring and Corban will be starting his freshman year of high school that fall, so it seems like a "sweet spot" for our family.

Have you found a house yet?
Since we still aren't planning to move until next year it doesn't make sense to buy a house yet. We will probably list our current house early next year and see what happens. We have build the two houses we've lived in ourselves, so that seems like an obvious option for us in North Carolina, but timing may dictate otherwise. The cool thing God has done is give Mike and I so much peace in this area. I am a planner and would prefer to know every detail. And while we do have a long wish list when it comes to the next house, it's all over the place from an old, falling down complete fixer upper to a brand new spec home built by someone else. We are all over the map, but the bottom line is we want simpler and smaller and have no high expectations. We don't even know how long we'll live in the next house since we might live there two years and realize we'd rather be in the next neighborhood or town over, so there's no real pressure to get it right this time.

What about the dogs? Did Macy die?
Well, we still have two dogs. Macy (on the left) is 15 years old and Katy is 3. Macy has a very hard time getting around and the heat is rough on her so she has stayed at my parent's house every trip this year. Macy has been declining for so long we never thought she'd even live long at our current house (and now we've been here 3.5 years). Poor puppy. We love her so much. Every move she's gone through with us has been really hard on her, so we're trying to keep things easy for her and she has always loved being at my parent's house. When it comes to the move next year, we'll just try to make her as comfortable as possible.

Why the camper?

Well, that's been a big part of the plan almost since the beginning. Mike has spreadsheet after spreadsheet about pretty much every aspect of this adventure. We knew we would be doing a lot of traveling as we tried to figure out where we would move and how. Mike figured out all the trips we would take (and we've been pretty close to his original number) and averaged out how much we would pay in hotels over the two years of this plan. We took that budget amount and bought a camper as our home away from home. Last year we pulled it all over the eastern half of the country. This summer it's our Raleigh home. Next summer we'll probably keep it in Ohio so we have a place to stay here - unless we need it in North Carolina if we're waiting on a house.

Did Mike sell his company?
No. He did hire a project manager who is learning how to run things. He'll be the  main contact in Ohio when we move and we'll hire his counterpart in North Carolina after we move. For now, Mike's company will be set up as one company with offices in two states. This will require a lot of travel back and forth which is another reason the camper is such a huge component in this plan. It also helps me feel like I don't have to say, "good-bye" to all my friends. :) And it helps that we won't have a huge interruption in income, either!

Well, these are the main questions I am constantly asked over and over again. There are a few more, so I'm sure I'll post a Part 2 one of these days. If you have any other questions, leave a comment and I'll either try to answer right away or do another post sooner rather than later. Thanks for joining us on this journey!
